Frequently Asked Questions

Kept here for reference. Klaykaps is no longer taking orders — these answers describe how things worked.

The Studio

Is Klaykaps still selling keycaps?

No — the shop is closed and we’re no longer trading. This site is an archive of the designs we made between 2020 and 2023. You’re very welcome to browse the gallery and reminisce with us.

What happened to Klaykaps?

After three lovely years we wrapped up the studio. Rather than let everything disappear, we built this archive so the past works — and the story behind them — could stick around. Read more on our Our Story page.

Do you still take commissions or collabs?

We’re not taking on new commissions or collaborations. You can still reach us on Instagram or Discord to say hello, though. 💛

The Keycaps

How were your keycaps made?

The process started with sculpting the design in clay. We then used silicone to create a mould from the sculpt. Once it cured, the keycap could be cast in resin using that mould.

Since every keycap was 100% handmade, there were always some minor cosmetic imperfections — these never affected the keycap’s structural integrity or function, and are part of the handmade charm.

What profile / stem did they use?

Our caps were cast with a standard Cherry MX-style (+) stem, designed to sit on the alpha and modifier rows of a mechanical keyboard. Handle the stem gently — each package included a small manual on how to loosen a tight stem.

Do you have a favourite design?

That’s like choosing a favourite child! But the Matcha Warabi, the Kuma bear and the Toast Friends always held a special place. Have a browse through the full gallery and pick your own. 🍵

NFC ID Cards

What is the NFC identification card?

NFC stands for ‘Near Field Communication’. Each ID card contained an NFC chip that let it share information — your keycap’s identity — with another NFC-enabled device.

With an NFC phone: unlock your phone and tap the card against the back of it. You’d get a notification opening a page with your keycap’s details.

Without NFC: simply type the code from the card on our Identify page.

All keycaps made after 20 June 2021 shipped with an NFC ID card containing a unique code.

I lost my NFC card — can I get a new one?

Unfortunately we’re unable to provide replacements for lost NFC ID cards, so please keep yours somewhere safe. Never share your identification code with others.

My code doesn’t work on this archive — why?

The Identify tool on this archive currently runs on a small set of sample records. The full lookup data lived in our old database; once it’s re-imported into the archive, real codes will resolve again. In the meantime, try the sample codes shown on the Identify page.
